Day 1 June 9th, 2001
Arrival in Windhoek, meeting the local tour management. Transfer into
Windhoek with a short sightsseing tour of Namibia's capital. Free hours for
strolling around. Dinner in a local restaurant. Stay for the night at a cosy pension.
Day 2 June 10th, 2001
At daybreak we leave for the "big white place of the dry water",
the Etosha National Park. After having put up the tents in Okakuejo, we spend
noontime at the pool (was cancelled because of delay). In the afternoon we
leave for the white plains to look for wild animals. A unique chance for
photographers. The waterhole at the camp is under floodlight at night
and promises interesting views of animals all through the night.
Day 3 June 11th, 2001
In the morning we drive into the wild again and notice how different
the areas of the park are. At noon we will stop in Halali and in the afternoon
we will follow hunters' trails to the old Fort Namutoni. Here is our next camp.
In the evening we will cook.
Day 4 June 12th, 2001
The Popa-Falls at Okavango River are our next aim. A long but
interesting drive, showing us the "African" side of Namibia.
Our camp directly at the Okawango River is in a very good area
for watching rare species of birds. If we leave early enough we will
have time for a stop at the Hoba-meteorit near Grootfontein.
Day 5 June 13th, 2001
A new day, a new country. Today we reach the safari-capital
of Botswana: Maun. We will set up camp and spend the afternoon with a
stroll through the city and preparations for the next days in the Okavango
Delta.
Day 6 June 14th, 2001
After a substancial breakfast at the camp restaurant we will be taken
to the edge of the canals in 4-wheel-drive vehicles. There we will distribute
the group and the luggage on the traditional Mokoros (dug-outs). Today
we will finally see what Africa really means. Behind each corner an elephant
could be waiting. We lean back and enjoy the peaceful ride and the beauty
of Okavango Delta, which is still unspoilt by humans. We camp in
the wild and it is quite possible to have animals in the camp. The evening walks
on the tracks of wild animals are a unique experience.
Day 7 June 15th, 2001
On the water we reach the next camp. Here the great variety of
bird species can be observed best. We will spend the hot noontime
under huge Jackalberry-trees, relaxing and enjoying the feeling of
being alone in paradise. In the evening we move upstream with our Mokoros.
You will have a chance to accompany the polers (boatdrivers) and
go deerstalking. The sunsets in the area are especially impressive.
Day 8 June 16th, 2001
In the morning we will once again enjoy the fantastic nature and the wildlife
of the delta. In the afternoon we will be taken back to Maun and to civilisation.
Dinner at the camp restaurant.
Day 9 June 17th, 2001
After breakfast at the camp restaurant we will drive north zu Chobe
National Park. (Good road conditions but a long drive.) We will set camp
in Kasane at the banks of the Chobe River. In the late afternoon you can
take a trip by boat or jeep into the park. (Optional, depends on time of arrival.)
Hippopotamuses, lions, eagles, elephants and many other wild
ainmals can often be seen along the river.
Day 10 June 18th, 2001
A new day, the last country. The Victoria Falls are waiting for us. We
cross the border into Zambia and reach the town of Livingston after a short
drive. Here we set camp a little bit outside the busy centre. (It is also
possible to camp at Victoria Falls. We will decide on the spot and it will
not change the rest of the programme.) We will visit the famous
Victoria Falls, another highlight of the tour.
Day 11June 19th, 2001
The day is free for all kinds of activities which are offered at Livingstone
or Victoria Falls. The most spectacular is probably a rafting tour on the wild
Zambesi River. Other activities include:
Day 12 June 20th, 2001 SOFI
Early in the morning we leave for Lusaka, Zambia's capital. After a short
sightseeing tour through the city, we drive north to find a place for the night.
Most probably we will camp in the wild but we are already close to the
path of the eclipse.
Day 13 June 21st, 2001 SOFI
Directly in the central zone of the eclipse about 40 km north of Lusaka
you will have enough time to prepare for the eclipse. Camp for the night north
of Lusaka.
Day 14 June 22nd, 2001
Today we drive to Chirundu to get to the Lower Zambesi National Park.
A last absolute highlight of the tour. Experience Africa at its best in this
spectacular and lonely park. Camp in Gwabi.
Day 15 June 23rd, 2001
Another day full of activities in the wilderness. Boatride on the Zambesi,
then relaxing at the pool.
Day 16 June 24th, 2001
